As long as the user can specify the encoding and Quixote honours this (which now appears to be the case as a result of your patch), then I'm content to regard any default behaviour that Quixote undertakes as a bonus. Essentially I was just trying to make that bonus nicer. I'd be happy to provide a patch as you suggested if that would help clarify my proposal, but I suspect that would have limited value when the disagreement is more about policy. I have some ideas on ways to lay out these differences and on approaches to resolving them. But if the fact of the matter is that you don't have the time or appetite to pursue this, then I'm willing to shelve my proposal and constrain my comments regarding character encoding to such cases where I believe Quixote isn't honouring what the user has asked for.
