Lionel:

I counted the ETFs and did a spreadsheet to analyse then a bit. The
total number of ETFs is 290. The important number, however, is the
volume. They account for about 15% of the money that changes hands
everyday and about 7% of share volume. The average ETF share price is
about twice the price of the overall share volume of the three
markets.

The top 10 of these accounts for about half of the volume of all ETFs.

I am uploading a spreadsheet that contains the list of all the ETFs
and a report that contains the above figures. The name of the file is
ETFVolumeAnalysis.xls.

In regards to the mutual funds the I also counted them and found
about 19000 also. I would like for everyone to note that this really
overstates the numbers by a factor of about 2 to 3. This is because
mutual funds are available in several classes for each fund. The
difference is mostly in the application of the sales charges.
