The messaging menu will always execute the "Exec" line in the desktop
file of your application. If your application is single-instance (which
it really should be when it integrates with the messaging menu), it will
just show the main window if it detects that there's already an instance
running.

Title:
Inform application when the application indicator is clicked
Status in The Messaging Menu:
Won't Fix
Status in Multiplatform instant messenger:
Confirmed
Bug description:
Previously (12.04 and earlier) I was able to assign some action on
application indicator itself, rather than create some special menuitem. It was
done using the server-display signal of IndicateServer. But now no special
signal is provided and activate-source signal also doesn't inform about server
activation too.
Such behavior is needed, e.g. in case when I close main window of IM and want
to restore it. The application icon is more useful for such case than separate
source.
