I'm wondering if it might be
able to sense the flow, and therefore it doesn't matter which one of the plugs I connect to the in and out ports on the keyboard. Does this sound possible?
Possible, but absolutely not going to happen. The cables are marked in some way. it might not be obvious but they are indeed marked. If the cable is working, putting your tongue on the end of one of them will result in a very small voltage which is noticeable but far from life-threattening. That will be the midi out. That will connect to midi in on your keyboard. The other cable will not give off any signal that it is working, but will be the midi in. That connects to the midi out of your keyboard. If when you plugged in your midi device to your computer it came up with the add new hardware wizard and you installed the drivers successfully, it should show up in QWS in the track properties under port, along with Microsoft GS wavetable synth. There probably will not be that many options, so it should not be too hard to find.
