True. As someone who started out in MIDI when the concept of a second port was not even thought of yet, that's one of the great values of it.
It depends on how your system allows you to allocate channels as if what you want to do will work. Any device set to the same MIDI channel as another device will sound. You may need to rearrange or "map" the sounds in the device so you don't get something odd, like a string section and the sound of a telephone ringing or the mix of piano and distorted guitar, but this isn't difficult at all.
