PerryI am under the impression that the aluminum in the R-390, and many other
military radios for that matter, is protected by a chromate conversion coating.
What does the polish or aggressive cleaning do to the original protective
coating?Regards,Jim

List here is an update on some of the cleaning materials mentioned in previous
post.
The simple green cleaner Bill Riches uses:
Simple Green® ExtremePrecision Cleaner, 1gal., Clear (SMP13406) US $35.62/ea
FreeShipping (Ebay). It's specifically made for aircraft cleaning.
Wenol red or blue is about $12 for 50 grams.
I've used Mothers Aluminum polish on my SP 600's.  Some times I add some Bon
Ami ONLY cleanser as it is non-chlorinated and it doesn't scratch.  The Mothers
polish will leave a bit of oily residue which is easily washed off with liquid
dish soap.
If one is re-working a SP 600, replacing all the easily accessible screw with
SS makes for a much nicer looking receiver. For small amounts Ace Hardware
and/or True Value stock an enormous variety.  I use Phillips head screws as the
are easier to tighten W/O slipping and scratching the chassis.
If one is planning to do several receivers, McMaster Carr online has every
screw in boxes of every type that you will ever in your life. There delivery
service is amazingly fast.
