Microsoft confirms that a bug in KERNEL32.DLL will cause Windows 95 and
Windows
98 (including Second Edition) based computers to stop functioning correctly
on
and after December 31, 1999. The bug pertains to the operating system's
ability
to multi-task.

According to a Microsoft spokesperson the Windows 9x kernel loads some
"enhancements that are in direct communication with the keyboard
accelerator
chip". This is the part that during extensive Y2K testing at Microsoft's
labs in
Redmond failed to operate on more then one program at a time, causing
system
lock ups, fatal errors, bootup failures and various other errors.

Due to the complexity of the Windows 9x operating system, patching this bug
may
take several weeks. Until a fix is available Microsoft Corporation advices
to
not run more then one program at a time since the random crashes, lockups,
etc.
will most definately cause corruption and possibly even loss of valuable
data.

If somebody has to run more then one program at a time, Microsoft advices
to
upgrade to Windows NT 4 workstation, an upgrade that can be purchased from
any
Microsoft Certified Reseller and that will run at about $200 per license.

This special offer is valid until a fixed KERNEL32.DLL becomes available.
