Just a little note: You should add /usr/sfw/bin to your PATH env var
or ask your Sysadmin to install SUNWgtar:
Solaris 10 (even the 3 years aka pretty old version u3 you are using) 
already comes with a lot of GNU stuff ...

On none-GNU OSs GNU tools usually pick up GNU tools before the OS tools,
when they find them ...
