FWIW when I installed R-devel  a week or so ago, I had to also install 
gfortran-4.8.2-darwin13.tar.bz2 from 

http://r.research.att.com/libs/

well "had to"  is perhaps too strong, but I was seeing complaints about not 
running 4.8 and they went away
after this install.
