Thanks all--- my fault again, this time for not reading the openssl::md5() documentation. Binaries all present and correct after all (on my Cylance-free machine), and checksums working as they should...

(Fixed in R-devel.) Indeed, I did use tools::md5sum(); it was the apparent difference between that and openssl::md5() that surprised me. I am a long-time fan of tools::md5sum(), and in fact it's used in a package of ours planned for release soon--- bit disconcerting to hear it's actually broken! However, I suspect R4.0 [ with fixed md5sum() ] will be released before our package sees the light of day.
