First off, congrats on doing it this way. Locally rebuilding a newer Debian package against the given libraries of an older release is the Right Thing as it gives you the full package management control. Secondly, I suspect gcc et al are playing a role. Stable only seems to have gcc-3.0 whereas testing has gcc-3.2.1 I am currently building 1.7.0 on testing just to see if it works.
