'gl' for construction of "balanced" factors and 'C' for factors
with specified contrasts. 'levels' and 'nlevels' for accessing the
levels, and 'codes' to get integer codes.
`codes` is deprecated. `unclass` also gives the integer codes. Perhaps
`unclass` is a better choice?
