gcc 2.96 does not exist: see gcc.gnu.org. It was never released and the `versions' shipped with various Linux distros are renowned for their bugs.
You almost certainly need a shared -lg2c, which has been standard for quite a while now (gcc 3.1 I believe). Is there any reason now to use gcc 3.3.3?
