The following demonstrates the basic problem:

Error: object 'family' not found whilst loading namespace 'MASS'
Fatal error: unable to restore saved data in .RData
If I simply remove .RData, start up R, load the indicated libraries,
and quit & save, I can start R up again with no problem.
