My guess would be that you are using bad headers, or perhaps an out of date compiler. I just recompiled today's arithmetic.c with no error, using $ gcc --version gcc.exe (GCC) 3.4.2 (mingw-special) Copyright (C) 2004 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
