Thanks Jorge, for your reply. In the end I changed my approach and used a
sub() strategy I found on this forum to recover the prefixes as below.
IDs.prefix <- sub("([^*])(_.*)", "\\1" , sampleIDs )
IDs.split <- cbind(sampleIDs , IDs.prefix)
