Here are a couple more possibilities:
plot(0, 0, main = expression(italic(X)[1]^bold(scriptscriptstyle("/"))))
plot(0, 0, main =
expression(italic(X)[1]^bolditalic(scriptscriptstyle("/"))))
The latter increases the angle a tad.
