There are binaries on CRAN for several distros. There is the R-sig-debian list for debian users. As far as I know, there are no mailing lists for other distros. This may indicate a preference for debian among R users. Or it may mean that debian is so difficult to use with R that it requires a mailing list. :-) As a debian user, I prefer the first explanation.
