The latter was the problem, many thanks for this! I use Rkward as GUI and obviously some packages have been installed into the user directory instead of being installed into the system directory. This messed up the installation :( After having deleted the local directory and restarted R lattice loaded just fine :) Once again: many thanks to Brian for his kind help!
