Try this:

meta <- paste0("ncols = ", dim(m)[2], ", nrows = ", dim(m)[1], ", cell
size = ???, etc.")
write.table(meta, filename, row.names=FALSE, col.names=FALSE)
write.table(m, filename, row.names=FALSE, col.names=FALSE, append=TRUE)
}
