Some here may have a disagreement with you on how useless French
is... ;-)
You have not told us what operating system you are trying to install R
on, but more than likely, your computer is running in a French locale
and R's default messages and so forth are picking that up.
You may wish to review the relevant section in the R Admin Manual:
