I've been using R on FreeBSD for several years now so I can tell you it works fine. However I have not yet upgraded to FreeBSD 5.0 so perhaps it has something to do with the new version. Here's something you may want to try: Rather than using the old version of R from the FreeBSD ports collection, download the latest R source directly from CRAN then try to ./configure && make && make install it. I've found that R obeys the FreeBSD 'hier' and the sources on CRAN are always more up to date than the compliled FreeBSD packages or ports.
