I haven't try in RH 8.0, but anyway try rmp -ivh route/to/your/R-1.6.2-1.i386.rpm Or if you have an older version of R already running: rpm -uvh route/to/your/R-1.6.2-1.i386.rpm Note that you need administrator rights.
