Dear Madame / Sir,
European Courses in Advanced Statistics (ECAS) is a programme supported by
the main Statistical European Societies.
The ECAS are intended to achieve postgraduate training in special areas of
statistics for both researchers and teachers at universities. Also
professionals, who work in industry and are interested in the application of
new statistical methods, are invited to participate
The theme of next ECAS will be about "Data Mining and Explorative
Multivariate Data Analysis" and it will take place at S.Maria di
Castellabate (Salerno, Italy) during September 28th to October 4th 2003.
In the context of Data Mining process, one of the goals is to aggregate the
information contained in large data sets into smaller and manageable
information. Such "data reduction methods" can include sophisticated
techniques like Cluster Analysis, Classification Trees, Linear and
Non-linear Principal Component Techniques, Stepwise Linear and Non-linear
Regression, Principal Component Regression, Partial Least Squares, etc.
However, an important basic difference between Data Mining and traditional
Explorative Data Analysis is that, Data Mining is more application-oriented
and looks for practically useful configurations in a data set, but not so
much concerned with modelling and identifying the basic nature of the
underlying phenomena.
For more information see www.dms.unina.it/ecas2003.
With this message we invite you to partecipate to the next ECAS and,
moreover ,in order to promote this new course, we would be glad if you sent
the information about that to people who could be interested to.
Yours faithfully
Prof. Luigi D'Ambra
(ECAS 2003 President)
