Thanks to everyone for your help. I decided to see if the session could be recovered if I connected back from the original, local terminal.
The local screen was locked by the KDE screensaver. Either my unlocking it, or the passage of time, seems to have got the process unstuck. It happened before I reattached to the screen session from a local terminal.
