The question of how did I "load it" is a hard one to answer - over the past two weeks I have had a variety of different attempts. I believe as you suggest, I had a source distribution and was struggling to find out how to compile it.

Most likely you unpacked a source distribution instead of installing. There is a binary version of RMySQL available at
http://stat.bell-labs.com/RS-DBI/download
If you didn't use that, please try it.
