You're right!
Here you are what happened:
desktop:/tmp# R INSTALL -l /usr/local/lib/R/library ffnet/
* Installing *source* package 'ffnet' ...
** libs
make: Nothing to be done for `all'.
** R
** help
>>> Building/Updating help pages for package 'ffnet'
Formats: text html latex example
......................................................
......................................................
And the compilation of ffnet commands kept going on as though there had
been no problems.... This was somewhat misleading to a newbye!!
Anyway, what steps should I take now?
