Hard to tell. (What does `balk at' really mean? What OS? What is meant by `now'?: there is no `1.9' and 1.9.0 is six months ago. And so on.) There are many packages on CRAN with sub-directories of inst (I presume that is what you mean by `folder'), for example MASS, sm, spatstat, and several (e.g. strucchange) have an inst directory just containing a doc subdirectory. As I hope is clear we would need a lot more information. Also, I think R-devel is a more appropriate place to ask such questions. -- Brian D.
