What do you think the `! command in Unix' does? Your subject line suggests you are thinking of the history substitution mechanism in a csh _shell_ (copied for bash). If that is what you mean, and you are using Unix with readline enabled, see `man readline' on your system for what is available (which can often be used to similar effect).
