What am I doing wrong?
You can look at the console log (eg start Console.app in /Applications/Utilities) to see what the problem is, but the fact that Hmisc is not available as a binary package probably means that it does not compile for the Mac (at least without some modification)

I have Hmisc installed on a Mac without any modification, i.e., using install.packages().
R itself was installed from source code.

Type library(help='Hmisc'), ?Overview, or ?Hmisc.Overview') to see overall documentation.
NOTE:Hmisc no longer redefines [.factor to drop unused levels when subsetting. To get the old behavior of Hmisc type dropUnusedLevels().
