Thanks to all for both the public and private answers on this topic. It looks like from your answers that I'll have to wait for "Modern Applied Statistics with S" to arrive at my local library (already requested) before there's a chance that things will become clear.
As for C/R hybrids, if things get messy if I do them "properly", I'll stick with what I'm doing.
