Make sure you have your environment variable LDFLAGS set to "-L/usr/ lib", otherwise I believe the linker doesn't look there.
You can check where R looks in the Makeconf file, under LDFLAGS. Not too sure though - just slogged through building on a brand new Solaris box, and that was my problem.
