Dear George, I'm afraid that people won't understand the context of your question -- that is, that you're using the Rcmdr GUI, but that the crux of your problem as do with changing the names of variables in the data editor using R on a Mac.
(As you know, I'm not a Mac user and unable to answer that question. I did answer the first part of your question in our private email correspondence, which is that the New Data Set window goes away only after the data editor is closed.) I hope that, with this clarification, a Mac R user will come to your assistance.
