Check out the XML package. ctv is one package that uses XML that you could look at.
Its hard to say whether the extra work to use XML is worthwhile for you. There are many XML tools around and the format helps formalize whatever format you are using but XML files tend to be longer and there will be more effort involved in using them which may or may not be worth it to you.
