I've added it now to R-devel.
The default is 'ask = dev.interactive(orNone = TRUE)'
where dev.interactive() has also been extended with the 'orNone'
argument.
The not-entirely satisfying aspect is that it currently does
apply to traditional graphics only as opposed to
grid-based graphics.
