Ah, I see, this happens in pie()'s line:
if (!is.na(lab <- labels[i]) && lab != "") {
where lab is one element of the expression.
I'd like to propose to change that line to
if (!is.na(lab <- labels[i]) && nchar(lab) > 0) {
