Hmm, maybe you shouldn't have tried to translate the message back to English.... I believe there is a similar message that has to do with _fonts_. If so, then the problem could be related to the font path or to locale issues. What happens if you do LC_ALL=C R ? It could be useful to know more about your system than "linux".
