See the R FAQ 2.6 http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#Are-there-Unix-binaries-for-R_003f at and in particular http://cran.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/dapper/ which provides R 2.4.0 compiled for Ubuntu Dapper (06.06) which obviously also runs on Ubuntu Edgy (06.10). Thanks to Vincent, there is also a native Edgy built but we haven't quite figured out how to get it mirrored to CRAN.
