... finding myself doing this by hand one too many times ... maybe someone else 
has found a nice general solution ...

I have a data frame containing n rows on p+q variables which I will call p.1, 
p2, ..., pp and q1, q2, ... qq. For simplicity all of these variables are 
continuous numeric. I want to create the following arrangement of plots:

A scatterplot matrix which contains p times q panels layed out as p rows and q 
columns.
In each panel indexed by i and j I want the scatterplot of p.i versus q.j
I also want to be able to integrate other typical lattice/grid goodies such as 
colors, symbols, groups, fits ...
The icing on the cake would be that the locator would work (that is, that I can 
select a point and find out its coordinates (and the leaf of the grob tree) so 
that I can annotate it.
