Summarizing: I'm running R 2.4.1 on a current FC6 32-bit system. In order to have the rgl R package install, I needed to install both mesa-libGLU-devel (FC6 version is 6.5.1-9) and libXext-devel (FC6) rpm packages. Thanks to everyone who commented.
