Thank you Dirk,
installing from source (`install.packages("cairoDevice")' as well as `R
CMD INSTALL cairoDevice_2.14.tar.gz') solved the problem today. Though
`install.packages("cairoDevice")' didn't help yesterday and everything I
knowingly did in between was updating all other packages through
`update.packages()'.
Anyhow, now it works!

That was the r-cran-cairodevice. After install the Build-Depends:
libgtk2.0-dev libcairo2-dev
and installing from source it works here too on 10.10.
I guess the binary package didn't catch an underlying Gtk change. I will
upload a rebuild to Debian.
