Seems that the solution to my problem, which I found searching through more web pages, was to do the following:
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin Why R couldn't be set up to compile JGR, which is an important tool to make R reasonably approachable, with system defaults is unclear to me. Certainly these kinds of problems will discourage anyone who is not sophisticated with software.
