In a terminal: ifconifg in the results there should be an entry for lo (aka loopback device/your local machine)
if it's missing edit /etc/network/interfaces make sure it has a section like: # The loopback network interface auto lo iface lo inet loopback if that seems fine look in /etc/hosts make sure you have a line like: 127.0.0.1 localhost All of the above is the defaults for most Linux distros, but maybe something is missing.
