Hello Michael and Paul, I've finally solved the problem. Michael was
definitely right, the problem was within Ubuntu. I've downloaded Xubuntu
12.10, just to try a different distro of ubuntu, but this time I've used
the torrent to download the image of Xubuntu, unlike Ubuntu 12.04.2 where I
used the direct link from the Ubuntu website, I also have Lubuntu 12.10 but
I don't remember if I had the same problem.
In any case, it is highly recommended to download the image from the
torrent than download it from the direct link of the websites.
What I did was:
-download Xubuntu 12.10 from the torrent.
-Install it.
-Run sudo apt-get update and then sudo apt-get install r-base.

I opened R and used the command install.packages("faraway"). There were no
problems with the installation.
I ran library(faraway) to be sure and I attached gala with attach(gala) and
then I used names(gala) just to see if everything was ok and everything
worked fine.
I used install.packages() to install other packages since I had the same
problem with any package I've tried to install and it is working perfectly.

So if any other users has the same problem it would be that his/her ubuntu
image was damaged so I recommend to download again the image from a torrent
instead of the direct link and also try different distros just to see if it
is related just to ubuntu, I don't think that is the case but it can work.

I just have to thank Michael and you Paul for your time trying to help me
with this problem. Since both of you are statisticians I just wanted to
tell you happy year of statistics.

And again Thanks!!!
