It looks like an oversight (see below), and I am sure Michael will look into
this when he has a moment.

But the next paragraph: you can get lattice, along with 23k other CRAN
packages, from r2u in pretty much the same way -- along with all of CRAN.

This shows lattice is not at CRAN as a binary, but MASS is. Both are of
course also in their current version at r2u.
