Hi John,

This may be a better question for the R-SIG-Geo list.  I'm pretty sure the
answer will depend on the extent of your study area and identifying a
projection system which can place spatial points as a grid over the study
area.  As I don't know your study area or extent it's hard to be more
specific than that, but a quick google search turned up a similar question
on stack overflow
