Yes, backward compatibility continues to be important, and Windows and OSX CRAN binaries are < 5.0.0. However, in a year or so, we may be ready to switch, and then no further maintenance will be done for the < 5.0.* code. It will entail moving away from rgdal::spTransform() and rgdal::project() as they are now structured, and rather using a fully qualified pipeline inside PROJ, without first transforming to WGS84 then on to the target representation.
