For example:

library(maptools)
getinfo.shape("sf.shp")
# presumably lines
roads <- readShapeLines("sf.shp")
class(roads)
plot(roads, axes=TRUE)

or

library(rgdal)
roads <- readOGR(".", "sf")
class(roads)
plot(roads, axes=TRUE)
