Hello Dr. Rawlins,
I would second the comments of Tom. In particular SAGA's cluster analysis
implements an approach similar to Definiens (previously eCognition), which
is quite popular in remote sensing. A summary can be found from their
website under References, "Image segmentation using representativeness
analysis and region growing". The paper summarizes their methodology, and
compares it to eCognition, and RHSEG. The comparison was made in 2005, and
at the time they found their methodology to have better segmentation,
handling and performance. I recently used the approach using Landsat band
ratios in the Mojave Desert of California, and have been impressed by the
approach compared to another unsupervised classification I have been trying.
The speed of the approach in particular is impressive.
Stephen
