[R-sig-Geo] Aitoff projection for histograms

Hello,
I am a complete newbie and would be grateful for any hints if it is possible to 
create Aitoff projections over some Z parameter in the dataframe using some geo 
package? 
It would be used for astronomy data mining. I use r-postgres to fetch data so 
postgres gis extensions could be of use as well.
